Ayanamsa Systems and Calculation Methodology

StarMeet uses the sidereal zodiac, which differs from the Western tropical zodiac by approximately 24 degrees — a gap called ayanamsa. The default ayanamsa is Raman (developed by B.V. Raman, one of modern Vedic astrology's most respected authorities). Other supported systems include Lahiri (Indian government standard since 1955), True Chitrapaksha (fixed star Spica at 180°), Krishnamurti (KP system), and Fagan-Bradley (Western sidereal).

The calculator uses three MIT-licensed astronomical libraries: jyotishganit for classical Vedic calculations (D1-D60, Dasha, Nakshatras), astronomy-engine for Julian Day conversion, tropical-to-sidereal transformation, and ayanamsa computation, and Skyfield for trans-Saturnian planet positions (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) using NASA/JPL ephemeris data.

Special conditions detected include: Vargottama (planet in the same sign in D1 and D9 — considered strengthened), Gandanta (planet in the 3°20' junction between water and fire signs — transformation point), Combustion or Asta (planet within a specific orbital distance of the Sun — weakened), Retrograde or Vakra (planet in apparent backward motion — intensified expression), and Digbala (directional strength when a planet occupies its preferred house direction).

What is a Vedic birth chart and how does it differ from Western astrology?

A Vedic birth chart (Kundli) maps planetary positions at the moment of birth using the sidereal zodiac — the actual astronomical positions of constellations. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac fixed to the seasons. The difference is approximately 24 degrees (ayanamsa). This means your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western Sun sign. Vedic astrology also uses the Dasha system for timing predictions and the Nakshatra system (27 lunar mansions) for detailed personality and compatibility analysis.

Do I need exact birth time for a Vedic birth chart?

For accurate Ascendant (Lagna) and house calculations, birth time within 4 minutes is important — the Ascendant moves about 1 degree every 4 minutes. Planet positions in signs remain accurate with approximate time, but house lords and Vimshottari Dasha starting balance may shift. Even an approximate time gives meaningful insight into planets in signs and nakshatras.

What is the D9 Navamsha chart?

The D9 Navamsha divides each zodiac sign into 9 equal parts of 3°20' each. It reveals your inner nature, soul qualities, and the deeper layer of marriage and partnership potential.
